KOH MAK - INFORMATION

Koh Mak Island:

Not only divers and snorkelers will feel extremely comfortable on Koh Mak, but also lovers of lonely beaches edged with palms. About 800 people live here. Beside the 10,000 palms you will find a temple, a clinic, a primary school, three fishing villages, a few little shops, 18 resorts and 2 diving bases. Although the island is quite unknown, it provides a good infrastructure and connection to the main-land, the new airport of Trat, which is only 30 km away from the pier of Laem Ngob. Flying time to Bangkok is only 50 minutes (www.bangkokair.com). Alternatively one of the coaches will bring you to Trat or Laem Ngop, taking about 5-6 hours on the newly built highway. There are ferry and speedboat connections to Koh Mak. The island has 24 hour electric power supply and also phone and Internet connection (Wireless LAN optional).

Koh Mak Island

History:

Koh Mak is the biggest privately owned island of Thailand. 100 years ago it was signed over to the ‘Chinese Affair Officer’ Luang Prompakdii, for his outstanding merits by King Rama V. His descendants still own the prevailing part of the island to date. In 1987 part of the island has been opened to visitors. Since then it has been slowly opening to a gentle form of tourism. Today a variety of resorts invite you to come and relax. Each one has its own charmed and special culinary delights.

Climate and tourist seasons:

Koh Mak has a tropical monsoon climate, typical for the tropics, which for all seasons the temperatures are considered fairly high. There are 3 main seasons in Thailand, the rainy season with tropical cloudbursts (from May to October), the pleasant season (from October to February) and the hot time (from February to May). Thus the average temperature in January is 25 degree Celsius. The best season to come to Koh Mak is between November and February, when you will enjoy warm temperatures and blue cloudless sky’s while it is cold and wet in Germany.
